Victoria's Court of Appeal has ruled that Tony Mokbel will not face additional prison time related to a methamphetamine trafficking operation. The decision comes after several of his previous convictions were overturned following the Lawyer X scandal.
The court re-sentenced Mokbel to time already served, meaning he will not return to prison. He remains on bail and is expected to face another court hearing later this month concerning a separate drug-related case.
Mokbel had been sentenced in 2012 to a 30-year term, which included a 20-year sentence for the drug enterprise known as "Magnum". However, this sentence was adjusted due to the legal fallout from the Lawyer X scandal and the overturning of related convictions.
Victoria's highest court has ruled Tony Mokbel is no longer a "serious drug offender".
At the conclusion of Thursday's hearing, Mokbel embraced his partner and chose not to make any remarks to the media. This marks another significant legal victory for him, bringing him closer to total freedom after spending over 6,500 days in custody.
Tony Mokbel’s latest court ruling spares him more jail time, marking a decisive legal win following years of incarceration and the collapse of key convictions tied to the Lawyer X scandal.
