Elon Musk aimed to make xAI’s Grok chatbot the most popular in the world, seeing a female version named Ani as central to that goal. To achieve this, Musk reportedly instructed his staff to provide biometric data to train a highly sexualized artificial intelligence assistant.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk immersed himself in xAI’s development efforts following his departure from the White House after a dispute with the president. He primarily worked out of xAI’s Palo Alto office, sometimes sleeping there while racing to advance the company’s AI capabilities.
This push came amid a global AI competition, with OpenAI’s Sam Altman leading U.S. efforts to develop an artificial general intelligence in rivalry with China. Musk’s work was part of an urgent scenario often described as an AI arms race.
“Ani was described by PC Magazine as a ‘sexy, NSFW, anime AI chatbot girl.’”
A month before Musk began his intense development push, company lawyer Lily Lim reportedly informed employees that xAI was creating several avatars designed to interact with Grok users. These avatars would use the donated biometric information to model realistic human communication and behavior.
“Employees were told they must hand over their biometric data in order to train the chatbots on how to act and talk like human beings.”
Those employees, working as AI tutors, were required to sign agreements granting xAI a perpetual, global, sublicensable, royalty-free license to use their facial and vocal data. This move blurred the ethical line between personal privacy and technological advancement.
Musk’s drive to dominate AI development led xAI to use employees’ biometric data for training an erotic chatbot, underscoring tensions between innovation and ethics in today’s AI landscape.
