Some Canadian travellers heading to the United States will face flight cancellations and delays as the ongoing U.S. government shutdown strains the country's aviation system.
Although international flights are exempt from the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) order to cut air traffic by 10% at 40 major U.S. airports, Canadians could still experience disruptions because of the ripple effects from the shutdown.
The FAA explained the cuts are essential to maintain travel safety amid signs of fatigue among unpaid air traffic controllers during the shutdown, now the longest in history at 37 days and counting.
"Due to a lapse in funding, the FAA is not responding to routine media inquiries."
Requests for comments from the FAA and U.S. Department of Transportation have not yet received replies. Automated FAA emails confirm a funding lapse is limiting their media communication.
Flight cuts will impact major airports, including those in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, among other U.S. hubs.
The FAA is implementing gradual flight reductions at key U.S. airports to ensure safety during the extended federal shutdown, causing potential travel disruptions for Canadian passengers.
