In his new memoir We Did OK, Kid, Anthony Hopkins, 87, expresses regret over a 2018 interview where he stated he did not care about his estranged daughter Abigail’s life. The Oscar-winning actor opens up about his sobriety, family, and career, candidly discussing his decades-long estrangement from Abigail, now 57, from his first marriage.
Hopkins acknowledges having spoken about Abigail "coldly" in the press, particularly in the interview where he revealed, after 20 years of no contact, he did not know her whereabouts or life details and admitted he "did not care" at that time.
"It is true that I have spoken about her in the press coldly, saying in one regrettable interview that after 20 years of not hearing from her, I no longer knew where she was or if she’d ever married or had children, and that at that point I did not care."
The actor also refutes false tabloid claims stating he introduced his daughter to drugs or rejected her as a child.
Hopkins explains this coldness was influenced by his own upbringing, saying the hardness was a default shaped by his grandfather:
"Though it’s no excuse, I know that was the coldness of my grandfather coming out: Move on! That hardness is my default."
Despite the estrangement, Hopkins expresses hope for reconciliation and wishes well for Abigail:
"I want her to be well and happy."
"I hope she knows that my door is always open to her."
Anthony Hopkins reflects regretfully on past statements about his estranged daughter, clarifying misconceptions and expressing hope for future reconciliation.
