In his memoir We Did OK, Kid, Anthony Hopkins shares a touching message to his estranged daughter, Abigail Hopkins. The renowned actor expresses deep remorse for the pain caused when he left the family.
"I will always be sorry for hurting her when I left the family, even as I believe to this day that I had no choice," writes Hopkins.
The Silence of the Lambs star reflects on their fractured relationship and wishes her well after years apart. Around two-thirds into the book, he writes:
"I hope my daughter knows that my door is always open to her. I want her to be well and happy. Until the day I die, I will never forget the sight of her in that crib, laughing up at me when I walked in the room the first year of her life, sleeping soundly the night I left."
Hopkins and his first wife, Petronella Barker, were married from 1966 to 1972 and together had Abigail, his only child. After their separation, Hopkins lost contact with his daughter and Barker.
"Aside from sending financial support, I didn't have contact with Petronella and Abigail for a few years," he says.
Summary: Anthony Hopkins publicly expresses enduring regret for leaving his family and warmly invites reconciliation with his estranged daughter in his new memoir.
