Cowan: Canadiens Goalie Jakub Dobes Emotional After Overtime Loss to Devils

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes was visibly emotional after a 4-3 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night. He stopped 24 of 28 shots but suffered his first defeat of the season, bringing his record to 6-0-1 with a 2.25 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

“We played good enough to win,” Dobes said. “Just not good enough from my side.”

The young goaltender admitted taking the loss personally, recalling a similar overtime defeat to the Devils last season, when he had made 40 saves in a 4-3 loss at the Bell Centre. That game marked his first NHL defeat after an impressive start, winning his initial five games following his call-up from the AHL’s Laval Rocket.

“It happened last year, it happened this year, lose to those guys in OT,” Dobes reflected. “So just disappointed in myself, that’s pretty much it.”

Following the game in New Jersey, Canadiens defenseman Noah Dobson praised his teammate’s effort and attitude.

“We all know the hockey he’s played to start the year is impressive,” Dobson said. “But it just shows the character and passion in this room. Everyone holds themselves to a high standard and wants to do what they can to help the team win.”
