Officers in Stockport are investigating an arson incident that occurred near a war memorial just days before Remembrance Sunday. Emergency services responded around 9:50 pm on Wednesday, 5 November, after reports of a group of males near the Cenotaph in Marple.
A fire was started in a bin, and wooden pallets were set alight, causing damage to the surrounding ground. Marple neighbourhood officers are appealing for any information related to this incident.
The incident sparked strong reactions on local social media and among councillors. Marple North councillor Steve Gribbon condemned the act, stating:
"This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated."
Police Sergeant Rachel Walton, from the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team, emphasized the severity of the situation:
"This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. Police units arrived on scene within minutes, and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service."
She added that police are collaborating closely with Stockport Council and the fire service to clean and restore the affected area.
