Wales will begin their autumn campaign against Argentina on Saturday, marking Steve Tandy's first game as head coach.
“I’ve been really impressed. What he does is lead by example. As a leader that has to be the go-to. I worked with Warburton and he led by example. The first thing about Jac is he leads by example in terms of his standards in training.”
Wilson emphasized the importance of setting strong foundations, highlighting Wales' reliable maul attack and defense as key strengths developed during their recent matches in Japan.
“The first thing we need to put down is the foundations. Maul attack and maul defence we can deliver. We put some of that in place out in Japan. It’s going to be a test but the toughness we associate with Welsh players, we want a pack of forwards who can be tactically astute but physically tough.”
He acknowledged the progress of key players, stating:
“He’s in the middle of that progression now. There’s a few boxes to tick but he’s moving in the right direction.”
Wilson confirmed the squad's overall fitness:
“Yes, he’s fit for selection. We are quite fortunate at the moment this squad is fit and healthy. The likes of him and some of the other names available gives us a challenge to select the team.”
Wilson outlined the goals for the team, emphasizing the need for a clear game plan and player development both individually and collectively:
“We want a game model and a game plan which assists that. We need a clear game plan and a way of playing. Work on our young players to get better as individuals. Collectively as a unit to go and win Test matches.”
He also noted changes brought by Steve Tandy to improve team cohesion and preparation:
“Steve has put his own stamp on things around scheduling, when and how we train, some adjustments to facilities. There’s more connection time to bring the group together and connecting.”
Wales' autumn campaign kicks off with a fit and focused squad led by new coach Steve Tandy, emphasizing toughness, tactics, and strong team cohesion for success.
