BBC Accused of Manipulating Trump’s Capitol Speech

The BBC is under criticism for allegedly altering footage of President Donald Trump’s speech on 6 January during a Panorama documentary aired just one week before the 2024 presidential election.

Leaked Dossier Reveals Allegations

A leaked 19-page internal memo by Michael Prescott, a former member of the BBC’s standards committee, accuses the broadcaster of editing the speech to create the impression that Trump incited the Capitol riot.

“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol. And we’re gonna cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,” Trump said before thousands of supporters on 6 January.

However, in the Panorama episode, this was edited to:

“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you. We fight like hell.”

This splice of separate speech parts was claimed to produce a misleading negative portrayal of Trump encouraging the riot.

BBC Response

In response, a BBC spokesperson told The Telegraph:

“While we don’t comment on leaked documents, when the BBC receives feedback it takes it seriously and considers it carefully.”
