Editorial: Threats against local body politicians disgusting
Abuse and threats aimed at local body politicians and candidates are unacceptable and deeply disturbing. Across the country, elected council members have publicly shared experiences of harassment while campaigning or carrying out their duties.
This week, it was revealed that some officials plan to use a special Remuneration Authority allowance to cover home security costs. This allowance provides up to $4500 this term for installing and monitoring security systems, plus $1000 annually for maintenance.
Personal Experiences of Abuse
Boynton, serving her second term, reported receiving threatening messages and sexually explicit photos during the election. She filed a harassment complaint after being followed at a public event. Her billboards were vandalized, and flyers were torn up and left in her mailbox with a threatening note stating,
“I know where you live.”
She expressed relief that the elections ended but warned,
“I’m glad these elections are over, but these crazy people are still out there.”
