UC Berkeley officials have not disclosed specific security measures but confirmed their readiness to host Turning Point USA on November 10, following the assassination of the group's founder, Charlie Kirk, nearly two months ago at Utah Valley University.
Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist and commentator, was fatally shot at a speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Turning Point USA is a nonprofit aiming to promote conservative values on high school and college campuses. It was co-founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk and his late mentor, Bill Montgomery.
The Berkeley campus event marks Turning Point USA’s first appearance at a California college since Kirk’s fatal shooting in September. His death has sparked heightened concerns about political violence and triggered debate over how universities manage security alongside free speech rights.
John Paul Leon, a UC Berkeley junior and president of its Turning Point USA chapter established in 2019, has been actively preparing for Kirk’s expected visit for months prior to the tragedy.
The killing has intensified concerns about political violence and renewed debate over university security and free speech balance.
