‘Sugar Daddy’ and ‘Sugar Mommy’ Culture Emerging in Tehran Nightlife

Once confined to whispers among private circles, the phenomenon of so-called “sugar daddy” and “sugar mommy” relationships — where financial support and social status are exchanged for youth and companionship — is now becoming visible in Tehran, the daily Haft-e Sobh reported Thursday. The paper described this as a “quiet but persistent trend” taking root across the capital.

According to the report, certain late-night hangouts in Tehran now act as meeting points for wealthy middle-aged or older individuals seeking younger partners for either brief encounters or long-term financial arrangements.

“I accepted to talk because I want others to know that if they enter such relationships, they might later face disappointment or worse consequences and lose their youth for money,” said Bardya, a 22-year-old university student.

Bardya said his involvement with a 52-year-old divorced woman named Nazanin began from an online message. He now visits her home several times a week, sometimes staying overnight.

“I provide for him financially — his education, a good car, a nice home, luxury trips — I spend money on him. But let’s be honest, this isn’t love, it’s a deal,” said Nazanin, who also spoke to the paper.

The daily noted that such encounters often take place along Tehran’s upscale streets and squares, where luxury cars gather near midnight.
