Israel’s parliament National Security Committee has begun urging the government to take firm action against foreign consulates operating in Jerusalem without Israeli approval. These missions, representing countries including France, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the European Union, and the Vatican, are accused of undermining Israel's sovereignty over its capital.
The hearing on Monday at the Knesset was the first in years to directly confront the presence of European diplomatic missions serving Palestinians within Jerusalem. Committee Chair Zvika Fogel framed the issue as a test of Israel's resolve to maintain sovereignty beyond military defense.
“The war for legitimacy is fought not only with weapons but through clear policy.”
Fogel emphasized that defending Jerusalem’s status is an obligation independent of external approval. He called for practical measures rather than mere declarations to uphold Israeli sovereignty in the city.
“Protecting Jerusalem’s status does not depend on anyone else’s approval.”
These lawmakers assert that the ongoing presence of these consulates compromises Israel’s sovereignty in Jerusalem and call for government intervention.
Summary: The Israeli National Security Committee urges decisive steps to close unauthorized foreign consulates in Jerusalem to reinforce the nation's sovereignty over its capital.
