Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Vesia opened up about the heartbreaking reason for his absence during the World Series. Together with his wife Kayla, they announced the loss of their baby daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia, in a shared Instagram post on Friday.
“Our little angel we love you forever & you’re with us always,” they wrote. “Our beautiful daughter went to heaven Sunday October 26th. There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her.”
Vesia, 29, had been away from the Dodgers since the start of the World Series due to what the team described as a “deeply personal family matter.” Earlier in April, the couple had announced they were expecting a child.
Expressing gratitude, the couple thanked the Dodgers organization for their understanding and support during this difficult time.
“Thank you to the Dodgers for their understanding and support during this time,” they said. “Our baseball family showed up for us and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”
They also extended appreciation to Dodgers fans, the Blue Jays, and all baseball supporters for their kind messages and encouragement.
“Thank you Dodger Nation, Blue Jays organization and all baseball fans for your love and support,” they wrote. “We have seen ALL your messages, comments and posts. It’s brought us so much comfort.”
Vesia did not participate in the World Series, having pitched in seven postseason games prior.
