Prime Minister Mark Carney has clearly stated that his Liberal government intends to use the dismantling of Canada Post in its present form as a test case for broader attacks on workers by the ruling class. Several media sources report that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is nearing a concession deal that would implement significant cuts to jobs and working conditions.
A new round of bargaining began on Monday, November 3. CUPW issued a statement praising the involvement of a government-appointed mediator and expressed the union leadership's readiness to resolve disagreements and reach collective agreements at the bargaining table.
In a separate statement, the union respectfully asked the pro-business Liberal government, which supports plans to cut two-thirds of Canada Post's 55,000 employees,
“to ensure that any decisions... are made... with Union input.”
Daniel Berkley, a postal worker and a key member of the Postal Workers Rank-and-File Committee, seeks to engage more workers. Those interested in connecting with the committee can email [email protected] or use the contact form provided at the end of the article.
