A legal dispute that began in 2019 between two South Indian restaurant brands has concluded with a ruling favoring Delhi’s Carnatic Cafe. The court affirmed Carnatic Cafe’s exclusive rights to the trademark "CARNATIC," prohibiting a Bengaluru restaurant from using this name.
The court found that the Bengaluru restaurant's use of the name infringed on Carnatic Cafe’s registered trademark. Carnatic Cafe, established in 2011, holds statutory rights over the brand.
The District Judge (Commercial), Neelam Singh of the Saket Courts, stated in the order dated October 29: “Lemonpepper Hospitality Private Limited and all associated persons must cease using the mark in any form. This includes manufacturing, selling, marketing, advertising, or providing restaurant-related services under the name ‘CARNATIC’ or any mark identical or deceptively similar to ‘CARNATIC CAFE’.”
This ruling protects the brand identity and trademark rights of the original Carnatic Cafe, preventing market confusion.
The Delhi court decisively upheld Carnatic Cafe’s trademark, blocking the Bengaluru restaurant from using the “CARNATIC” name and related domains to protect brand exclusivity.
