South Sudan Court Deemed "Illegal" by Lawyer
A lead defence lawyer for South Sudan's suspended First Vice President Riek Machar, Geri Raimondo Legge, argued that the special court trying his client is operating unlawfully.
The court's legal mandate allegedly expired last week, according to Legge, who filed a motion to dismiss the case and secure the release of all eight accused.
The court has become jurisdictionally incompetent and unlawful.
- The ministerial order establishing the court granted it a one-month mandate, from Sept. 9.
- Machar's party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM/A-IO), has dismissed the trial as politically motivated.
