At the premiere of Eternity, A24’s romantic dramedy, Elizabeth Olsen reflected on her longtime thoughts about death and solitude. The film centers on a woman who chooses where to spend eternity—with her first husband, who died in the Korean War, or her second, to whom she was married for over 60 years.
Olsen shared that she has envisioned her own death since youth. “I’ve had this kind of plotted out from a very young age,” she explained. In high school, she imagined herself as an elderly woman living alone on the coast of England, surrounded by a small town with only one bakery, one coffee shop, and a few other essential shops.
“I always imagined I would die alone.”
She described the setting as foggy, wet, and cold, with long solitary walks and possibly an animal companion. Though she enjoys meeting new people and being part of a community, her dream involved solitary final years.
When asked about dying alone, Olsen smiled and said, “I don’t know what to do with that, but that was part of my dream.”
Teller, Olsen’s co-star, expressed a hopeful view of the afterlife. He wishes to reunite with late friends and family members he never met and desires simplicity in what comes next.
Elizabeth Olsen’s reflections on death blend solitude with introspection, while her co-star Miles Teller hopes for peaceful reunions beyond life.
