I reviewed Leeds-based band Nervous Twitch’s fourth album Some People Never Change back in 2022, so it was a pleasant surprise when singer Erin asked if I’d like to review their newest release — the fittingly titled The Day Job Gets in The Way.
From the first listen, it’s clear that Nervous Twitch haven’t lost their talent for transforming everyday frustrations into joyful rebellion. While their previous record carried a “less-angry riot grrrl” energy, this album feels looser and more playful, yet remains just as punchy.
If I were to draw a comparison, it shares some DNA with The Slits: quirky, rough-edged punk with a DIY spirit. However, the band has crafted a sound uniquely their own — scrappy but melodic, unpolished yet immediately catchy.
The production embraces a charmingly rough-around-the-edges, almost vinyl-like feel, reminiscent of discovering a hidden gem in a second-hand record shop. Erin’s vocals float sweetly above the wiry guitars and driving rhythm, adding warmth even to the more biting lyrics. Don’t be fooled by that sweetness, though.
“Erin’s vocals sit sweetly atop the wiry guitars and driving rhythm section, giving even the more biting lyrics an unexpected warmth.”
Author's summary: Nervous Twitch’s latest album blends rough punk energy with melodic warmth, delivering relatable rebellion wrapped in an infectious and charmingly raw sound.
