Tornado devastates southern Brazil, leaving six dead and hundreds injured

A violent tornado struck the southern Brazilian state of Paraná on Friday night, killing six people, injuring over 400, and forcing about 1,000 residents from their homes. The disaster brought destruction to several towns across the region.

Widespread destruction in Paraná

The town of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu experienced the most severe impact, where more than half of the urban area was damaged. Roofs collapsed, and numerous buildings were destroyed by the fierce winds and heavy rain. The nearby city of Guarapuava also sustained serious damage.

Injuries and evacuations

According to the state civil defence agency, 437 people were treated for injuries, and approximately 1,000 residents were evacuated due to unsafe conditions.

Meteorologists' assessment

Experts from Paraná’s Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring System estimated the tornado’s wind speeds between 180 and 250 kilometres per hour (111–155 mph), confirming it as one of the strongest recorded in the region in recent years.

Government response and condolences

Institutional Relations Minister Gleisi Hoffmann announced a visit to the affected area, accompanied by Acting Health Minister Adriano Massuda and other federal officials to coordinate emergency relief and reconstruction efforts.

“We will continue to support the people of Paraná and provide all necessary help,”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wrote on X, sending his condolences to the victims and their families.
