A celebrity chef has reflected on his fond memories of Swindon, one month after closing his only restaurant in Wiltshire. Rick Stein, a well-known chef, presenter, and restaurateur, has built a reputation with a chain of popular UK restaurants and several cookbooks.
On October 5, Stein closed his Wiltshire restaurant in Marlborough and soon after postponed a theatre tour planned for Swindon this winter. Speaking to the Swindon Advertiser, he shared memories of the town, discussed his new book, and addressed the tough economic times for pubs and restaurants.
Despite being a household name alongside figures like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, Stein revealed that much of his early 20s was spent traveling weekly to Swindon.
"When I was a young lad and attending Oxford University, I used to come to Swindon every week to print the student newspaper called The Cherwell," he said.
He added that although he hasn't visited Swindon in many years, he cherishes the memories:
"I haven't been to Swindon in many years and I should probably go back, but I do have very fond memories of it."
"The town always makes me think of the smell of the printing press and brings it all back."
Stein also expressed concern about the difficult economic challenges currently faced by pubs and restaurants, reflecting the tough climate in the hospitality industry today.
Rick Stein fondly recalls his formative years traveling to Swindon for newspaper printing and acknowledges ongoing challenges in the hospitality sector.
