A snow squall watch has been issued for Sarnia, Petrolia, and Lambton County. Environment Canada forecasts possible snow squalls late Sunday night through Tuesday morning, with heavy lake effect snowfall ranging from 15 to 30 cm, and even more in some areas.
“Prepare for the possibility of quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.”
A weather statement added that two to five cm of snow was likely Sunday continuing into the evening, making travel hazardous and sometimes reducing visibility to zero.
“The snow is falling and so should your speed,” said Sgt. Ed Sanchuk of West Region OPP in a social media post Sunday.
With the first snowfall of the season, the OPP urged residents to drive carefully, allow extra stopping distance, and increase space between vehicles. Drivers were also reminded to clear snow and ice from their vehicles before driving, stay alert, and be patient on the roads.
Sgt. Sanchuk emphasized the importance of turning on headlights during the day for visibility:
“You want to be visible. Arriving safely is what matters most.”
Environment Canada noted lake effect snow would impact Lambton Sunday evening and possibly areas near Lake Huron’s eastern shore on Monday morning. Snow squalls may also spread towards Lake Erie.
Summary: Rapidly developing snow squalls and hazardous travel conditions are expected in Sarnia and Lambton County, prompting safety reminders from authorities.
