Josh Hutcherson joined the HBO comedy I Love LA quite late, stepping in after the original pilot had already been filmed. Despite the timing, he found ample opportunity to collaborate with Rachel Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie to develop his character, Dylan, who is Maia’s longterm, live-in boyfriend.
Hutcherson explained their shared goal for Dylan: “We didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy. We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”
The team reimagined Dylan’s character from the initial portrayal by Miles Robbins in the pilot. They explored who Dylan really is, his motivations, and why he remains with Maia. Hutcherson noted that this collaborative effort led to a more nuanced and deeper character than initially presented on the page.
“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy.” – Josh Hutcherson
Author’s summary: Josh Hutcherson transformed his role in I Love LA by crafting a layered and compelling character, refusing to settle for the typical "boring boyfriend" archetype.
