The cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed revealed in a Deadline interview that Zendaya was initially set to play the role that eventually went to Ayo Edebiri in Luca Guadagnino's film After the Hunt, but she later dropped out.
Production for After the Hunt began in July 2024. During that year, Zendaya had a relatively light schedule, only filming one movie, The Drama, in October 2024. This suggests she may have chosen not to participate in the project despite the opportunity to reunite with director Guadagnino, who directed her earlier film Challengers.
The decision to leave After the Hunt appears wise in hindsight. The film was widely criticized for its reactionary politics and performed poorly at the box office. The $80 million production budget is particularly puzzling, considering that much of the film's setting is confined to rooms and offices.
“After the Hunt started production in July 2024. That year, Zendaya had a relatively empty schedule, only shooting one film — ‘The Drama’ — in October.”
“I’m still not entirely sure how the film cost $80M to produce — it still boggles my mind, since most of it takes place in rooms and offices.”
Zendaya was slated for a key role in After the Hunt but wisely withdrew; the film faced harsh criticism and box office failure despite its high budget.
