ELMONT, NY -- During the New York Islanders’ home opener, Matthew Schaefer scored his first NHL goal. The Islanders were down 4-1 to the Washington Capitals when Schaefer scored.
Schaefer, the 2025 first-overall pick, added to his early milestones. The goal came during a power play at 16:41 of the third period. After Kyle Palmieri was robbed, a scramble ensued, and the loose puck went to Schaefer.
The 18-year-old defenseman scored, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery challenged for a hand pass, but the goal stood after a review.
Schaefer also scored his first assist and point in the Islanders’ first game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
