Pegula now trails 3-8 in head-to-head matchups against Sabalenka, but this win marks a significant milestone in their rivalry.
Prior to this season, Pegula had limited success in Wuhan, never progressing beyond the third round, and had not played a quarterfinal in a WTA 1000 event in the East Asian swing.
She had reached the finals of three Big Titles, including last year's US Open, but was unable to win due to Sabalenka.
