Government-issued "child abuse" pamphlets conflate faith with harm, targeting minority religions and worsening an already perilous environment for religious freedom in Japan.
The pamphlets contain kid-friendly postcards with cartoon characters portraying various bullying or abusive situations, and inviting children to report such. Distributed by the Japanese government to schoolchildren this year, the pamphlets claim to educate students about child abuse.
Once a child fills out the card, it is sent to the nearest Legal Affairs Bureau, no postage required. However, under the guise of protecting human rights, these "Children’s Human Rights SOS Mini-Letters" actually perpetuate harmful stereotypes about religious minorities.
A panel of United Nations human rights experts are sounding the alarm over the discriminatory materials.
