Akazawa Urges Tepco to Pursue Coexistence with Fukushima Community

Ryosei Akazawa, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, has implored Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (Tepco) to pursue "coexistence" with the local Fukushima community while safely dismantling the wrecked Fukushima plant.

Akazawa made this statement during his first trip outside Tokyo since becoming minister, where he inspected the plant for the first time and told Tepco officials:

"I hope that you will continue to advance efforts toward achieving coexistence with the local community over the long period of decommissioning work — this will be a key concept going forward."

Tepco announced in July that the full-scale removal of nuclear fuel debris will not start before fiscal year 2037, a task Akazawa described as "unprecedented and extremely difficult on a global scale."

Author's summary: Akazawa urges Tepco to coexist with Fukushima community.
