Fixing the Property Tax System
Vermonters want a fair and reasonable property tax system, as well as a solid education system for their kids.
The current system has led to unacceptably large increases in property-tax bills, with most Vermonters seeing a significant rise in 2024.
- Current law adjusts property tax payments for households with incomes under $115,000.
- According to the Public Assets Institute, households with incomes under $150,000 pay around 3% of their income towards school property taxes.
- However, for households with incomes over $150,000, the percentage of income paid decreases, with those earning $500,000 paying around 1.5% of their income.
We also want a solid education system for our kids, not closed local schools and long bus rides.
Author's summary: Vermonters seek a fair property tax system and efficient education.
