A new agrivoltaics system has been installed at a coffee farm in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, with the potential to set standards for energy independence in hurricane-prone regions.
Miguel Berdiel, owner of Hacienda Berdiel Torres, faced numerous challenges, including high energy costs and damage from Hurricane Maria, which hindered the farm's growth despite optimal coffee-growing conditions and a hydroponic greenhouse.
The challenges faced by Hacienda Berdiel aligned with the NREL's InSPIRE initiative, leading to a collaboration with Twende Solar to plan and coordinate a solar installation.
The project aims to promote energy independence and climate resilience.
