Abbott Laboratories Wins Court Case on NEC Baby Formula Claims
Abbott Laboratories has won a court case in Illinois, where plaintiffs claimed that their Similac infant formula caused the death of a baby from necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening intestinal disease.
The US district court for the northern district of Illinois, eastern division, ruled in favor of Abbott, with the judge, Rebecca Pallmeyer, issuing a "judgment in favour of Abbott and against plaintiffs" in the case of Brown v. Abbott.
- The case involved a baby, referred to as DB, who was fed Similac Special Care 24 (SSC-24) formula in September 2021.
- The baby died a few days later from NEC, according to the plaintiffs.
The court document and judgement ruling described the infant's death as a result of NEC, but ruled in favor of Abbott.
