About 30 magistrates protested outside Parliament on Wednesday, demanding salary increases and better working conditions.
They came from across the country, including KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and the Western Cape, and were dressed in their robes, holding signs that read: “Magistrates Matter” and “Justice for Justice Workers.”
“We can’t afford school fees for children,” said Magistrate Mondli Nhlangulela. “It is a dire situation … Sometimes you can’t even make it to work because you can’t put fuel in your car.”
A Parliamentary representative accepted their petition on behalf of the presidency. Magistrates currently earn around R1 million and are seeking improvements to their salaries, which have not kept pace with inflation.
According to Nhlangulela, magistrates are the “forgotten child of the judiciary”.
