Under-Reporting of POPIA Breaches on the Rise Amidst Increasing Cyber Attacks
The Information Regulator is facing challenges in enforcing the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) due to insufficient staff, as cyber attacks continue to escalate.
Mukelani Dimba, executive for education and communication at the Information Regulator, notes a discrepancy between the number of security threats and the actual reports received.
Only a fraction of incidents gets reported to the regulator.
A report by Check Point Research in July revealed that South African companies experience 2,113 cyber security threats weekly, with many likely involving personal information.
