Exam regulator Ofqual has introduced a new regulatory tool to publicly "rebuke" awarding bodies that break rules, but do not warrant financial penalties.
The "chief regulator's rebuke" sanction is intended for cases where the rule-breaking is not serious enough to warrant a financial penalty, and will fill an "important gap" in Ofqual's enforcement options.
"This updated policy reflects our agile approach to regulation. We want to ensure awarding organisations resolve issues early wherever possible." - Chief regulator Ian Bauckham
Ofqual hopes the new penalty will enable simple cases of misconduct or malpractice to be resolved quickly, supporting "agile regulation".
