Ursula von der Leyen: Circular Economy Key to Europe's Raw Material Independence

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of the circular economy for Europe's strategic autonomy.

In her address at the Berlin Global Dialogue 2025, she announced the RESourceEU plan, aimed at securing EU industry's access to alternative sources of critical raw materials (CRMs).

"It starts with the circular economy... to exploit the critical raw materials already contained in products sold in Europe.

Some companies can recycle up to 95% of the critical raw materials in batteries, highlighting the potential of the circular economy.

The RESourceEU plan aims to secure access to alternative sources of CRMs in the short, medium, and long term for the EU's industry.
