The Italian government has proposed to postpone the national tax on single-use plastic packaging for the eighth time.
The draft budget for 2026 states that the "plastic tax" will remain suspended until 31 December 2026, meaning it cannot come into force before 2027.
The tax was originally intended to apply from 1 July 2020, but was repeatedly postponed, initially due to the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
