French Lesbian Literature Takes Center Stage
A new literary prize, the Prix Gouincourt, is set to be awarded for the first time, highlighting the growing prominence of lesbian literature in France.
The prize is the brainchild of 34-year-old Lauriane Nicol, who founded the media outlet Lesbien Raisonnable in 2017, which includes a newsletter, website, and Instagram account with over 38,000 followers.
The term "gouine" is a slang term for lesbian, and the prize is an ironic nod to France's most celebrated literary award, the Prix Goncourt.
The Prix Gouincourt will be awarded on November 7, three days after the Prix Goncourt, and will celebrate a "French lesbian novel" chosen by a jury of 10 artists and book industry professionals.
The prize aims to shine a spotlight on a genre that is becoming increasingly prominent, and its creation is a significant step forward for lesbian literature in France.
