Residents in the Moss Park area finally regained electricity after an outage starting at 8:11 a.m. Wednesday. Toronto Hydro confirmed the power was restored by 1 p.m. Thursday.
Power has now been restored to all customers. We sincerely thank everyone for your patience as our crews worked through these extensive and complex repairs.
The outage initially affected over 1,000 customers around the intersection of Queen Street East and Jarvis Street, extending to Parliament Street and Front Street East. The number later dropped to nearly 600 as repairs progressed.
Toronto Hydro counts customers by meters rather than individuals. Brie Davis, a spokesperson, explained this could underestimate the actual number of residents impacted.
“In some cases, condos and buildings are fed by a single bulk meter. Because of this, our outage map reflects one meter as one customer, even though many residents may be impacted.”
The outage resulted from a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site causing damage to Toronto Hydro’s infrastructure. Repair crews had to excavate 14 feet underground to reach the affected area and carry out repairs.
“The work that caused the dig-in is unrelated to Toronto Hydro but resulted in damage to our infrastructure. Repairing this damage required our crews to excavate 14 feet underground in order to access the impacted area.”
The nearly 29-hour power outage in Moss Park was caused by external construction damage, affecting nearly 600 customers, with full restoration completed Thursday afternoon.
