After a brilliant start to the season, Victor Wembanyama faced another challenging performance in the San Antonio Spurs' 118–116 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. It was the Spurs’ second consecutive defeat.
Wembanyama admitted that the pace of play currently feels overwhelming as rival teams adapt defensively to contain him.
“The game feels fast right now,” Wembanyama said. “Personally, I haven't seen this kind of defense from teams. So we need to adapt as a collective. In the Phoenix game, it was the case as well. We're learning.”
The rookie highlighted the Lakers’ defensive focus on him, especially the frequent double-teams that limited his rhythm.
“Mostly, it was the doubling,” he noted. “They probably walked through all our situations in shootaround because it seemed like they were very ready. It felt like they let me catch the ball, but they were ready to double and rotate after that.”
The Lakers restricted Wembanyama to 19 points on 5-of-14 shooting, along with eight rebounds and five turnovers in 33 minutes. He fouled out with less than two minutes left as San Antonio trailed 113–112. The Spurs still had a final chance when Julian Champagnie was fouled with one second remaining, but he missed both free throws, securing the Lakers’ win.
This game marked the second time in seven appearances that Wembanyama fouled out, already exceeding his total from the previous two seasons combined.
Author’s Summary: Despite a strong season start, Victor Wembanyama is struggling with the league’s defensive adjustments, admitting the speed and intensity of NBA play have become more challenging.
