Health Alert: Recall of Popular Tomato Sauce Due to Botulism Risk

First and Last Bakery, LLC, a food manufacturer based in Connecticut, has announced a recall of three tomato sauce products after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned of possible contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism.

Products Included in the Recall

All products are sold in 26 FL OZ jars and were distributed in Connecticut and Massachusetts through retail chains such as Big Y and Stop & Shop beginning September 22, 2025. Each jar carries a “Use By” date of September 2026.

FDA Statement on Safety Concerns

The FDA reports that these sauces were manufactured without the required approved schedule or evaluation process, which significantly raises the potential risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum.

About the Health Risk

Clostridium botulinum causes botulism, a serious and potentially fatal illness. Symptoms may include dizziness, muscle weakness, blurred vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and, in severe cases, respiratory failure or death.

Consumer Advisory

Consumers who purchased any of the recalled products are advised not to consume them and to dispose of them immediately. Refunds or exchanges should be sought directly from the point of purchase.

Author’s Summary: The FDA recall of several First and Last Bakery tomato sauces highlights critical lapses in food safety procedures and underscores the serious risks posed by botulism contamination.
