The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has released an online suitability map for geothermal energy to encourage development in the region. The map highlights the potential of different geothermal energy applications and provides a strategic basis for investments and project planning.
Geothermal energy, particularly for shallow heat extraction using ground source heat pumps, already plays an important role in ensuring a sustainable energy supply and advancing decarbonization efforts, with a goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
With the knowledge that the Canton of Aargau has favorable conditions for geothermal energy, the Cantonal Government accepted a motion from the Grand Council in March 2022 calling for the creation of a geothermal register to identify the geothermal potential in the municipalities of Aargau.
Following this motion, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment collaborated with internal and external experts to conduct a detailed investigation into the canton's geothermal potential.
The map serves as a key tool to promote targeted geothermal energy use across Aargau and supports the canton's sustainable energy future.
