Switzerland says conditions remain unmet for recognizing Palestine

Switzerland Maintains Preconditions for Recognizing Palestine

Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter stated on Monday that the prerequisites for officially recognizing Palestine are still unmet. She emphasized that a permanent ceasefire and a stable government are essential for progress.

“We feel that there are some conditions that have to be fulfilled, like all the hostages must return home, and also the dead bodies. There must be a permanent ceasefire, there must be a plan for peace.”

Keller-Sutter explained that recognition could occur in the future once these conditions, including stable governance and elections, are satisfied.

Switzerland’s Stance on Gaza Situation

Addressing whether the situation in Gaza meets the genocide criteria, Keller-Sutter said Switzerland condemns every violation of international law. This includes Israel's disproportionate military actions and Hamas’ terrorist attacks.

“If there is a genocide or not, will be decided by international courts.”

Zurich Canton's Decision on Gaza Children

Regarding Zurich canton’s refusal to provide medical care for wounded children from Gaza, the President clarified that such decisions belong to the cantonal authorities, not the federal government.

Summary

Switzerland insists that recognizing Palestine requires fulfilled conditions such as a ceasefire, hostages' return, peace plans, and stable government, while condemning violations from both sides in Gaza.
