Long-term use of melatonin supplements to support sleep may have negative health effects

Long-term Use of Melatonin Supplements May Impact Heart Health

A review of five years of health records involving over 130,000 adults with chronic insomnia showed that those who used melatonin supplements for more than a year had an increased risk of heart failure diagnosis, hospitalization for heart failure, and death from any cause.

Study Overview Presented at AHA 2025

This preliminary study was presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025, held in New Orleans from November 7-10. The event is a leading forum for exchanging the latest scientific findings and clinical practices in cardiovascular health.

About Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland that regulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle. Its levels rise in darkness and fall during daylight. Synthetic melatonin, which is chemically identical to the natural hormone, is commonly used as an over-the-counter supplement to aid sleep difficulties and jet lag.

“Long-term use of melatonin supplements, often used to promote sleep and address insomnia, was associated with a higher risk of heart failure diagnosis, heart failure hospitalization and death from any cause in chronic insomnia,” according to the study presented at AHA 2025.

Author's summary: Long-term melatonin use for insomnia may carry risks related to heart health, highlighting the need for caution and further research.
