Bemidji community comes together as food shelves see increased traffic

Bemidji community responds to increased food shelf demand

Food shelves have seen increased traffic during the government shutdown, which has affected November SNAP benefits. A group of friends held a tailgate pantry event on Saturday to pass out food and clothing items.

BEMIDJI — A trunk-or-treat-inspired tailgate pantry was one of several efforts to support local food banks over Veterans Day weekend, while the government remained in a shutdown. Gina Froemming and Jessica Santala hosted the event after reuniting thanks to Reddit. They and their friends provided food items, children's clothing, cat food, and fresh produce for anyone who stopped by. Donors could give or exchange items, and all remaining items were donated to the Bemidji Community Food Shelf. The organizers considered the event a success.

“We both just had this idea of having a pop-up kind of food pantry for extra food access. With SNAP benefits being cut and everything, it just seemed like our community was going to need extra help. So, Saturday felt like a good choice.”

They believe their contribution will help aid local food banks that are experiencing increased traffic due to the government shutdown, impacting November SNAP funding.
