Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer on the Series

Oppenheimer, the showrunner behind Tell Me Lies, explains that audiences are drawn to the complexity of messy, toxic relationships. Over three seasons, she has crafted a raw and deeply frustrating portrayal of young adulthood.

“I think that a lot of shows have flawed characters that are messing up, but still in a way that is easy to idolize,” Oppenheimer told Teen Vogue during an exclusive visit to the Toronto set in August. “In real life, when you are in a romantic obsession, you are just so belittling of your own happiness and dignity. It can be really humiliating, and I think we show that in a way that you’re told not to in shows. I think a lot of studios or networks are scared to have female characters act pathetic, and the reality is that everyone acts pathetic sometimes.”

Authentic Portrayal of Romantic Obsession

Unlike many shows that glamorize flawed characters, Tell Me Lies reveals the painful and degrading aspects of romantic obsession, confronting viewers with honesty rarely seen on screen.

The series remains a stark reminder of how toxic relationships deeply impact personal happiness and dignity, marking the show as one of the most intense narratives about youth in recent years.

Author’s summary: This Hulu drama boldly exposes the harsh realities of toxic love, showing vulnerable, imperfect characters in a way rarely portrayed on television.
