Tron: Ares has proved to be a controversial addition to the canon, sparking debate on its ranking among its predecessors.
In comparison, Tron: Legacy (2010) opened to $44 million and topped out at $172 million domestically, with an additional $228 million from overseas markets. Tron: Ares, on the other hand, opened to $33.2 million domestically and $26.7 million outside North America, despite a 15-year inflation period.
While it isn’t a masterpiece, it’s a fun movie, especially in an IMAX theater.
With a budget of $180 million, Tron: Ares seems to be the end of the Tron franchise on the big screen. The question remains, where does Ares rank compared to the original Tron and Tron: Legacy? Tron: Ares had ambition and good intentions but stopped short of making compelling points.
Author's summary: Tron: Ares ranks among its predecessors with mixed results.
