How scarecrows went from ancient magic to fall horror fodder

Evolution of Scarecrows

Scarecrows, a common autumnal decor, have a history that dates back to ancient times. According to agricultural scientist Rebecca Brown,

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a commercial farm that used a scarecrow with the intent of scaring birds. If they’ve got one, it’s as seasonal decoration.”

Historian and folklorist James P. Leary notes that if scarecrows were used to ward off birds,

“they would be constructed in spring and serve their purpose through summer.”
This makes the association of scarecrows with autumn somewhat unusual.

Today, scarecrows are often found in corn mazes, crop fields, and as decorations in grocery stores. They are also featured in fall-themed horror films, sometimes as villains.

Author's summary: Scarecrows have evolved from ancient magic to autumnal decor.
