Seeking a third straight victory, the Minnesota Wild twice held one-goal leads and managed to tie the game at 3-3, but the Carolina Hurricanes responded every time to ultimately win 4-3.
After a strong start in a challenging atmosphere, the Hurricanes answered every challenge posed by the Wild. Matt Boldy scored twice, breaking a significant scoring slump. Brock Faber contributed his second goal of the season. Despite Minnesota's continued effective special teams' play, Carolina rallied late to secure the win.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t find a way to win the hockey game, but it was a hard-fought battle by both teams,” said Wild coach John Hynes. “They had pushes and surges, and we had pushes and surges. But, unfortunately, we weren’t the team to win it tonight.”
Filip Gustavsson, in his 12th start for Minnesota, had a shaky beginning as the Hurricanes scored four goals on their first eight shots. He then steadied, finishing with 23 saves.
“This is a really good team we’re playing against, and we’re matching up against them pretty good today,” Gustavsson commented. He noted that he didn't do anything special but managed to get back into rhythm as the game progressed.
Despite valiant efforts, the Wild missed critical chances to secure a win as the Hurricanes consistently fought back and prevailed.
