Australia's most haunted house hits the market for one brave buyer

Australia's Most Haunted House Up for Sale

Australia's most haunted home, the Monte Cristo Homestead in Junee, New South Wales, has been listed for sale, inviting a daring buyer to overlook its eerie reputation. Located about 470 km southwest of Sydney, this Victorian-era manor carries a chilling legacy spanning 140 years.

A Legacy of Paranormal Tales

The Monte Cristo Homestead is one of the Riverina region’s most well-known estates. Over time, locals and visitors have shared countless stories of ghostly encounters and unexplained phenomena, with some claiming that up to ten spirits inhabit the estate.

Residents and Mysterious Presences

Olive Ryan lived in the mansion for half a century and described sensing the presence of its original owners, Christopher and Elizabeth Crawley, who died in 1910 and 1933.

“I've had a hand on my shoulder,” Ms. Ryan told The Project in 2015. “I've had my name called when I've been here by myself. It's nothing to hear footsteps on the balcony—and you go out and there's no one there.”

Her son, Lawrence Ryan, who grew up in the mansion, said that he often felt someone watching him while moving through its halls.

Historic Architecture

The two-storey manor at 1 Homestead Lane retains its original fireplaces and even a grand ballroom. Today, it also operates as a museum and a popular stop for ghost tours and overnight stays, continuing to fascinate skeptics and believers alike.
