The Met Office has announced a yellow weather warning for rain, effective from midday until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11. The alert includes Plymouth and much of the South West, where residents have been urged to prepare for possible flooding and travel disruption.
Forecasters from the Exeter-based Met Office expect heavy rain starting in the morning and persisting through the afternoon and evening, accompanied by strong southerly gales. Most regions could see up to 40mm of rainfall, while some areas may receive as much as 70mm.
Flooding of homes and properties remains possible, and roads could be affected by surface water and spray, leading to slower travel times and hazardous driving conditions.
“Given recent wet weather, and saturated ground in places, this could lead to flooding in a few spots. More generally, difficult driving conditions are likely for the evening commute in particular, with delays due to slow traffic and the increased possibility of accidents.”
The Met Office noted that the warning might be extended or a new one issued for Wednesday, November 12, as further rain is expected. The Environment Agency continues to monitor river and sea levels, which remain high, though no official flood alerts are currently in force.
A band of heavy showers will move east this morning, possibly bringing thunder, followed by brighter periods with scattered heavy showers.
Summary: Plymouth and the South West brace for a deluge as the Met Office warns of possible flooding and travel issues under a prolonged yellow weather alert.
